Following in his father Roy Helu Jr.’s footsteps, Vilami Helu played his first game of rugby for the Danville Oakes in the Bay Area at the age of 13. A few years later, Helu had his first experience with USA Rugby, being selected for both the sevens and XVs U18 teams in 2013. A year later, Helu began playing for Saint Mary’s College, where he was named a Collegiate All-American in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Helu bolstered his rugby resume after being selected for the USA Men’s Falcons Sevens side to tour England. In September of 2022, Helu was called up to join the Men’s Eagles during 2023 Rugby World Cup Qualifiers in Dubai. There, he earned three caps including his debut against Kenya in November.
