VANCOUVER, B.C. – In a striking display of performances, the USA Men’s Sevens defeated long-time sevens rivals Fiji 40-14 in the HSBC Canada Sevens 5th Place Semifinal. It was the USA's highest margin of victory over the Fijians in the history of the World Series.
Ben Broselle scored his first career World Series try towards the end of the match, adding to a cascade of brilliant phase plays that completely outpaced and outmaneuvered the Fijian side.
Fiji had nearly no attacking opportunities and scored their 14 points off the back end of the few American mistakes.
The U.S. were brilliant at the restart, reclaiming all of them while delivering precision with ball in hand and cohesion to win. Physicality was also in brave display, as shown when Danny Barrett bulldozed his way over the line while carrying four Fijians on his back – all attempting to make the tackle.
Malon Al-Jiboori joined the scoring party as well in his first return to the senior Series since the 2017-18 season. Cody Melphy, Carlin Isles and Madison Hughes all also added to the final tally.
A total of 13 World Series points are now up for grabs in the 5th Place Final where the USA will face England at 8:31 PM ET on NBC Sports Gold.
