The USA Men’s Sevens roster of 12 joins a 60-sport Team USA delegation as they head to Santiago, Chile, for the 2023 PanAmerican Games. Rugby Sevens kicks off Friday, November 3, live on the PanAm Sports Channel.
Phil Greening will serve as head coach for this young roster, with Ben Pinkelman as the assistant and captained by Faitala Talapusi. New names to the senior squad join the list for Santiago, including a few who shone on the U23 squad at 2023 RugbyTown Sevens. A few young but returning Eagles make the list for November, highlighting the program’s look at developing athletes toward LA 2028.
Lorenzo Thomas joins the USA team for the first time since 2019 following a four-year suspension. He last trained with the Eagles ahead of the 2019 PanAmerican Games.
In Santiago, the USA will match up against Canada for the first time since their Paris qualifying win at 2023 RAN Sevens. They will also face Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, Mexico, and Uruguay.
USA Sevens Head Coach Mike Friday on the up-and-coming squad:
“I am really excited to see how this young exciting squad operates which is predominantly 23 years old and under. We want to provide an opportunity for this group to experience multi-sport games and get exposed to representing Team USA as we start building toward LA 2028, whilst we expect a few of these individuals to force themselves into the Paris 2024 conversation. The challenge for the boys is fierce as we expect a near full strength Argentina, Canada, Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil to be representing. This group of young men are excited for the opportunity and the responsibility and are under no illusions how competitive this tournament will be to medal in. We can't wait to see them take the field and compete.”
