After winning their way up the ranks at SVNS 2, the USA Men’s SVNS Eagles prepare for the final season Tour heading to Valladolid, Spain and Bordeaux, France to compete in the last 2 stops of the HSBC SVNS World Championships.
Head Coach Zack Test, and staff have named the 14 man roster which sees veteran Adam Channel return from injury as well as a debut from Rand Santos, adding a second sibling set to the team brotherhood. The Eagles will kick off Friday May 29th in Pool C opening against Spain, before taking on Fiji and France in pool play. All matches will be broadcast live for American audiences on Paramount+.
Fighting through injuries in Hong Kong in the Championships first stop, the Men’s Eagles fell to tight scoreline margins, With time to reflect and recover, the USA Men have refined their approach and are ready to close out the season on their terms.
“At this stage of the World Championship, the margins are incredibly fine.” commented Test, “Games are decided by small moments: a restart, a tackle completion, a connection detail, a penalty, a decision under fatigue. Our focus has been on raising the level of those details so that when the pressure moments come, the margins fall in our favor.”
“Hong Kong was tough, but it also gave us a clear picture. When you get results that do not reflect where you want to be, you have to be honest. You have to look deeply within and identify where you are, understand what needs to rise, and then respond. That is where our energy has gone: learning, owning it, sharpening our process, and making sure we are better because of it.”
“Our objective is to play to our standard and the potential we know we have in us. While requalification is the outcome we are chasing, our focus is not only on the outcome, but lives in our process, our details, our behaviors, and the level of execution required to put ourselves in a position for the outcome to go our way.
“These final two stops are about showing that response. They are about carrying our standard, trusting our work, and performing with the discipline, clarity, and belief needed to finish the season the right way.”
With refining systems, Test has added new momentum to the field of play with the addition of Cal Rugby utility back, Rand Santos set to make his USA Sevens debut.
“Rand is a natural playmaker. He sees the game well, understands space, and has a good feel for how to bring others into the game. Over the past four years at Cal, he has been a driver for that program, and has brought with him that level of professionalism to the set up.”
“On the field, he has the insight to dictate our style of play. His communication, work rate, and ability to manipulate defenders to put other players into space and allow them to do what they do best is a valuable quality in sevens, especially when the game moves quickly and decisions have to be made under pressure.”
