USA Men’s Eagles sealed the silver medal at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium at the first stop of the HSBC SVNS 2 tour.
The Eagles went 3 for 4 before meeting Kenya in their final match where they defeated the home team with a clinical defensive performance, capitalizing on attacking opportunities to upset the table and move into the silver position through a favorable points differential, while Germany sealed the tournament win.
Proud of what he saw in the opening tournament, Head Coach, Zack Test recapped the team’s performance,
“'I’m proud of the boys, but we have so much more to give.”
“It's been a tough week in Kenya, but the strength of the group is how we come together every single moment. We talked all week about brotherhood, and how we need to stick together in every minute of every game. Looking back on this weekend, it was a good start. Day one, we came out, and we did what we needed to do. We had a couple slip ups versus Uruguay, but we bounced back in that second half to put the nail in the coffin in that game. We took the game for granted against Germany. It's a good lesson learned that you have to do the process and get the details right every single time. But what makes elite teams great is how you respond, and coming up against Kenya in this hostile environment, to put a world class defensive performance together, and get out of here with a second place building into the rest of the Sevens 2, was a great start.”
The USA went undefeated on day one with an opening win against Belgium. David Still opened proceedings with the first try, followed by Pita Vi and Lucas Lacamp quickly following up right before the half leaving Belgium 21-0. Aaron Cummings lurched over after great forward momentum and fight from David Still and footwork from Pita Vi to run in his second before an inside Offload to Stephen Tomasin to touch down while leaving the Belgians scoreless.
A dramatic game two against Uruguay forced the Eagles' composure. David Still opened with a try, but Uruguay soon responded with two. Jake Broselled found points to level but despite the USA holding territory and possession, still trailed 14-12 with only a minute left until Pita Vi in a moment of magic, ran one in to secure the Eagles win.
A North American derby in game 3 gave the USA bragging rights with a Lucas Lacamp 4 try performance to seal the win 41-7. Lucas Lacamp opened first, followed by a try from David Still to extend the lead. Canada made a comeback just before halftime to bring it back 17–7 at the break. On the restart, the Eagles found their flow, scoring four unanswered tries alongside tries from Adam Channel and Pita Vi.
The USA ran into day 2 at altitude first meeting Germany who went 2 for 3 on day one with a loss only to Kenya. Germany established a strong lead from the start holding the Eagles 14-0 going into halftime. On the restart, the Germans stayed clinical, extending the scoreline by 28 before Pita Vi found space and dotted one down.
Heading into their final match, still in the medal race, the Eagles sat a close 3rd on the table behind Germany and Kenya. The Kenyans chances of gold were alive and so, came out firing, matching the energy of the home crowd. The Eagles held strong in defense and turned over possession to get the ball into Lacamp’s hands to set the opening try, setting their intention of disruption. Wendling ran over off a lineout and Will Chevalier soon after found space to break through before getting the ball to Channel to run in the third USA try. Kenya found points in the final seconds with a well executed line out to stride the full length of the pitch and put points up.
While the Germans secured the gold, the Eagles defeat over the Kenyans, pushed the Eagles up the table to secure the silver based on winning on points difference.
The USA Men’s Eagles return to home for a brief training block before they head to the second stop of series in Montevideo, Uruguay.
