The USA Women’s National Team 7s have won a silver medal at the Pan American Games 2019 in Lima, Peru. Following a near perfect campaign including three shutout wins, the Eagles Sevens fell to long-time rivals Canada 24-7 in the Gold Medal Match to conclude their weekend campaign.

SEMIFINALS | UNITED STATES 33-19 BRAZIL

The USA Women’s Sevens were first on the board against Brazil through a try by Ariana Ramsey in the opening minutes. Ramsey’s score was followed by the combination of Ilona Maher and Jordan Matyas who added another when Maher took a long run and passed to Matyas on a tackle for the 12-0 lead.

Brazil struck back after but it the United States answered back on the next possession through Ramsey’s second try of the game. A massive tackle by Abby Gustaitis forced Brazil to fumble the ball and Emily Henrich brought the scoreline to 26-7 with minutes remaining.

The Brazilians found an attacking edge in the final few minutes which became a back-and-forth affair until fulltime. Where Brazil scored, the USA followed with tries of their own until fulltime blew and the U.S. claimed a 33-19 result.

GOLD MEDAL MATCH | UNITED STATES 10-24 CANADA

The Canadians were in good form throughout the Gold Medal Match, opening with a try in the first minute and continuing to build a consistent attack thereafter.

Ilona Maher and Kayla Canett combined to level the score at 7-5 but Canada’s patience on offense exploited every gap and error by the U.S. to build a 24-5 lead with two minutes remaining. Maher managed to find space on the wing to give the USA one more try before the final whistle blew but there simply wasn’t enough time to launch a full blown comeback.

At fulltime, the Eagles Sevens fell 24-10 to claim their second-consecutive Pan American Games silver medal.
