The USA Women's Sevens pathways program held a U18 high performance camp in Chula Vista this month as they prepare to identify players for the Global Youth Sevens tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, this December.
Held October 9-13, the camp featured five athletes who competed in Global Youth Sevens last year. Twelves athletes attended the East/West U18 Regional Pathway camps, and includes six who traveled with the team to Wales over the summer.
Irene Gardner oversaw the camp as head coach of the women's sevens pathways, with support from Kelly Griffin. The staff will use the camp as a selection tool for the upcoming Global Youth Sevens girls competition.
On the outcome of the camp, Gardner said, "This camp featured primarily athletes new to the women’s sevens pathway program. It was an exciting opportunity to see players introduced at recent talent ID camps and U18 competitions.
The players made a great deal of progress on their sevens technical skills and took initiative to build their off field high performance behaviors.
We look forward to seeing these young athletes develop on their rugby journeys, and work toward becoming future USA Eagles."
