Originally from Ireland, AJ started playing rugby when he was 8 years old and also played soccer. When he moved to the U.S., he attended Life University, playing rugby full time and catching the eye of USA Rugby High Performance. MacGinty made his USA Eagles debut in July of 2015 against Samoa.
In 2015, MacGinty made his first Rugby World Cup appearance and went on to sign with Sale Sharks the following year. One of the better flyhalfs in the game, MacGinty was also named to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, before assuming the role of Captain with the squad in 2021.
