Joe Schroeder picked up rugby, a sport his brothers had played and loved, in high school at the age of 15, while also competing in football, basketball and was a Division III cheerleader in college at Trine University. Keeping with rugby, Schroeder would eventually be scouted by the USA Men's Sevens while training at Tiger Rugby Academy.
In 2017, he joined the Men's Falcons at the developmental Silicon Valley Sevens tournament earning him an invite to the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens where he made his senior national team debut. Schroeder would also go on to represent Team USA at the 2019 PanAm Games and Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
