A multi-sport athlete growing up in Southern California, Taufete'e started playing rugby when he was 18 to impress his now-wife and fell in love with the sport.

Taufete’e competed for a number of clubs in Southern California before earning his first cap with the Men's Eagles, notably against South Africa at Rugby World Cup 2015 in England. Taufete’e also captained the USA Selects, before making his way overseas to play in the Premiership.

Becoming a mainstay on the USA roster, Taufete’e made history in 2019 by passing Ireland’s Keith Wood to become the highest scoring front row forward in test match rugby history. The same year, Joe was named to the USA squad for Rugby World Cup 2019.
