Born in Bloemhof, South Africa and raised in Queenstown, JP Smith has been playing rugby since he was 6 years old, joining the team in grade school. Coming up through the Blue Bulls rugby ranks and eventually appearing for the South Africa U20s during the 2014 Junior World Championship.
Smith found his way to the United States via Major League Rugby in 2019, joining the Seattle Seawolves and winning the MLR Championship that same year.
JP was first invited to the USA Eagles camp in 2024, starting at scrumhalf for his debut against Romania in July.
