Born and raised in Anchorage, Treder traces her Inupiaq ancestry back to King Island on the Bering Island. The second-oldest in a family of 10, Treder’s Alaska Native heritage was a major part of her upbringing. Growing up, Kathryn was also a state wrestling champion playing multiple sports.

In 2014, Treder made her way to Stanford University where her academic work included comparative studies in race and ethnicity, a field she would like to make a career of someday. Similarly finding rugby her freshman year after a stranger on the bus who played in college recommend she try out for the team. Treder was then identified by USA Rugby during the 2019 WPL All-Star Tournament and later made her USA debut during the CanAm Series that fall in San Diego, CA.
