Kristine Sommer began playing rugby when she was 18 after attending a practice with some of her dormmates. Prior to that she was a high school volleyball and soccer player and continued to play club soccer along with rugby in college. In 2007 she won a California State Championship title in soccer.

In rugby, Sommer won two Division I Club Championship titles with the Seattle Saracens -- the first coming in 2016 before she was selected to debut with the USA Sevens in Dubai. The following year in summer of 2017, she made her debut with the USA National Team in 15s against Canada. Following her first cap, Sommer was selected for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 in Ireland where she helped the Women’s Eagles finish fourth. Returning to the Club pitch in 2018, Sommer was selected to the dream team at the 2018 Club Sevens National Championships.

Remaining with the Women's Eagles for the next five years, Sommer was again selected to the Rugby World Cup roster for New Zealand in 2022. Between then also committing her time to the XV Foundation, an organization focused on continually funding the USA Women's 15s program.

Sommer is also a Special Olympics Ambassador who volunteered at the 2018 Special Olympics and owns a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of California in Santa Barbara.
