DUBAI, UAE. - The USA Women's Sevens' unbeaten run came to a halt when an accurate and physical New Zealand side dominated the Dubai Cup Semifinals for a 24-7 win.
For most of the game, possession sat with the Black Ferns Sevens; and though the United States had a few opportunities to make moves, the opposition was more accurate and resilient in execution.
Defensively, the Black Ferns Sevens were incredibly physical, covering every breakdown and scrambling across the field to hold the USA's many try scorers at bay. By halftime, the opposition had built an 0-19 lead; and when the second half began, that lead increased to 24-0 directly from a scrum.
The United States had one significant attacking opportunity where the group maintained its passing rhythm for some time amidst two penalties against the opposition. Finally, an offload by Kris Thomas found Jordan Matyas just before falling to touch, where Nicole Heavirland came in with good timing to finish it off and end the drought, 24-7.
As time had almost completely expired, the USA didn't have many more chances to cut the deficit. Once the whistle blew, New Zealand got their hands on the ball, kicked to touch and ended the disappointing 14-minute run.
With one match remaining, the USA women will now face Australia in a rematch of the Cup Final from Glendale, as both teams fight for bronze in Dubai. Kick off is set for 8:38 AM ET on NBC Sports Gold.
