USA Men's Eagles Sevens take 9th place at HSBC Vancouver Sevens.
The young squad came up against 10th ranked Uruguay for a second time in stop after meeting them in pool play where the result did not go the Eagles way. Pace and composure helped the squad stay in the hunt to clinch the win with a late try from Jake Broselle. Forced errors in pool play challenged the USA to regroup just in time for the knock out round where the Eagles found their stride - shutting Ireland out and earning their space in the 9th place.
Head Coach Simon Amor commented on the squad's performance; ”We definitely made some improvements and I’m incredibly proud of the boys. They are putting it all out on the pitch, willing to die for each other and honoring their country. They’re persevering when it gets tough and maintaining strong discipline.
‘We’ve made progress on how we play the game. This team is on a journey, learning and getting better each match. Uruguay is a good and physical side. We made some mistakes - in both games - it's a tight contest between us, where our kick off and defensive work has improved a lot. That said, we just missed a couple of opportunities in the pool games. So, it is frustrating - but I’m incredibly proud of the progress the guys are making.”
The USA opened pool play against Spain, at the time tied for first in the SVNS rankings, attacking hard and building an initial lead. An unfortunate man down, put the American defensive line under pressure and Spain capitalised. The US managed to come back through a Tomasin offload to Jake Broselle to run in a final try, but were unable to slot the conversion giving the Spanish the win in just a two point margin. Match two against the Fijians saw shifts in momentum from both sides through the first half, but Fiji was able to keep the foot on the gas and hold the momentum in the second half.
Day two, the Eagles came in ready to change the script and the USA opened with a beautiful set up from Chevalier to Lacamp to touch down. Uruguay answered too quickly though, as the USA defensive line did it’s job and held strong but some forced errors let Uruguay sneak through for just one more and a just three points in the final result.
Advancing into the knockout rounds, the Eagles met the Irish for the 9th place Semi Final. USA were dominant in the breakdown but just falling short with small handling errors, which Ireland took advantage and broke away to touch down. A disallowed Irish try in the grounding gave the USA the catalyst they needed, and a fantastic offload from Aaron Cummings to Will Chevalier with a beautiful chip, to recollect on the bounce and dot down gave the USA the try they needed. The USA took residency in the 22, and by the second half, settled in to make it past the try line and clinch the win, punching their ticket to the 9th place semi final.
USA ended on a high with victory in the 9th place playoff facing Uruguay yet again. Jake Brosell starts as he means to go on with a try to put points on the board first. Uruguay set play causes disruption for the USA and the sides swap tries until 1 minute 45 left on the clock and the Americans need to find five more points. Jake Broselle responds to the challenge and finishes what he started to take advantage of an open outside and slides into give the USA a 22-21 win and the 9th place finish.
The USA Men’s Sevens return to Chula Vista for a solid training block before hitting the Tour again and heading off to famed series stops; Hong Kong and Singapore kicking off March 28th and April 5th respectively. USA fans will have the chance to cheer on the Eagles in the Tour finale when it hits Los Angeles May 3-4, 2025. Tickets on sale now.
