With back-to-back tournaments of action ahead, the USA Men's Eagles Sevens look to kick momentum off at the legendary Hong Kong stop of the HSBC SVNS.
A famed tour stop known for energy and excitement, the Hong Kong leg will be hosted in a new venue, Kai Tak Sports Park, where the USA Men’s Eagles Sevens will look to progress and make their own mark on the new grounds.
Coming off of wins against Uruguay and Ireland to secure a 9th Place finish in Vancouver, the team aim to channel that energy in their opener against Fiji. The USA Men will again also meet Ireland in Pool A after taking on Argentina. Action kicks off on March 28th at 12:48 AM EST with knockout stages beginning March 29th at 4:15 AM EST. Catch all the action live on RugbyPass TV.
Head Coach, Simon Amor said on the upcoming tour and team progression, “There's a physical, mental and emotional load that comes in back to back tournaments. The guys are learning their potential, but realistically it's only when you have the 55,000 people in Hong Kong cheering. You go through that game, the emotional, mental, physical, and then, after that game, you've grown after you’ve experienced it. The good with our group is that we're battling in these games, challenging the decision making and the execution and it continues to improve. We can see the guys are pushing themselves and realizing what it takes.”
Named to the traveling squad for his USA debut, Uluamu Niutupuivaha will make the trip to Hong Kong and Singapore. Niutupuivaha has come up through the USA Junior National team ranks in recent years before earning an invite to sevens residency in Chula Vista, most recently competing with the 2024 USA U23s at RugbyTown 7s alongside a season with Anthem Rugby Carolina of Major League Rugby. The big frame athlete brings some speed and size to the squad.
Amor said on the debut, “Ulu has the potential to be a fantastic sevens player and we are excited to see what he does. He’s a big player with a big physical presence and has worked on his fitness and game knowledge. He’s big and physical and can be an absolute menace on the pitch. Like any player making their debut, there will be mistakes, but he works hard everyday to learn and his desire to improve is tremendous.”
Captain Stephen Tomasin added ahead of the back-to-back, “Hong Kong is special, it produces magical moments. Margins have been tight in all of the last pool games we’ve played. We have all the tools and the confidence to do something special in Hong Kong, so we'll just go out there and play our best game.”
Hong Kong and Singapore are staged as the last HSBC SVNS tour stops before the USA heads home for the SVNS World Championship, live from Los Angeles May 3-4. Tickets available at lasevensrugby.com
