2025 marks 50 years since the establishment of the United States Rugby Football Union, half a century from June 1975 when four regional organizations across the country met in Chicago to officially form USA Rugby.

As USA Rugby enters a new era internationally and domestically, the organization is excited to commemorate the last 50 years while leveraging the celebration as a catalyst for an even brighter future. Throughout the year in 2025, USA Rugby members, donors and fans alike can look forward to a series of stories recounting historical moments, along with opportunities to celebrate together through events, memorabilia and philanthropic opportunities.

USA Rugby CEO, Bill Goren said on the anniversary year, “In more ways than one, this is truly a benchmark year for USA Rugby. With remarkable memories and momentum to look back on over the last half-century, there is much to celebrate together. In partnership with the USA Rugby community, we are thrilled to commemorate the last 50 years as we also salute the occasion with plans for positive growth over the next 50 years.”

With an eye on the future, Goren and USA Rugby are pleased to announce the assembly of a 50th Anniversary Committee, comprised of influential rugby supporters keen on developing the philanthropic effort of the organization. Early committee members have officially joined the group, with additional members expected to be recruited in January. USA Rugby Board Member and Eagle Alum Denis Shanagher will lead the committee, while USA Rugby founding member Bob Watkins will serve as co-chairman for a 50th Anniversary Gala Committee geared towards celebration gatherings in the community this year. The key objective for the 50th Anniversary Committee is to drive sizable philanthropic contributions within USA Rugby, focused on establishing a sustainable financial support for all areas of the organization into the future.

USA Rugby founding member Bob Watkins shared, "Being a part of the union's establishment was a special experience in Chicago 1975, an occasion that has evolved in significance over the last 50 years. USA Rugby's community of hard-working contributors have shaped the game we know today, a game we're pleased to celebrate and most importantly invest in for further growth."

USA Rugby fans can similarly join the festivities through a commemorative content series USA Rugby will share through the year, looking back on monumental moments in the organization's history. Special merchandise celebrating the 50th anniversary will also become available this spring through World Rugby Shop.

Throughout 2025, there will be multiple opportunities for supporters to engage with the celebration as fans, donors and participants. The first of these opportunities is a major gifts fundraising program, On The Team. For information on this and other programs, please visit usa.rugby/50.
